論理的文章とは何か
論理的文章とは
論理的文章とは、内容に無駄がなく整理され、論旨に一貫性があり、書き手の意図が間違いなく読み手に伝わる文章です。
伝えたいメッセージの根拠を明確にし、一貫した主張がある文章が、論理的文章と言えます。
根拠に主張と矛盾がある、文章と文章のつながりがわからない、書き手の感想に過ぎない、などは論理的文章とは言えません。
英文ビジネス文書では自分のメッセージを明確にし、相手に間違いがないように伝えなければならないため、文章の論理的展開が重要です。
英文ビジネス文書の論理的文章の書き方
論理的文章の書き方にはいくつかの方法がありますが、英文ビジネス文書では、結論（言いたいこと）を先に述べ、次に説明（理由）を述べる書き方にします。忙しい人が斜め読みをしても、とりあえず伝えたいことが伝わるようにするためです。
つなぎ言葉
論理的な文章を書くには、文章同士のつながりを意識する必要があります。何が主張で、何が根拠か読み手にわかるように、文章どうしを正しいつなぎ言葉で結ぶことで、説得力のある論理的な文章になります。
英文ビジネス文書では、論旨の一貫性が重要なため、文章と文章をつなぐ「つなぎ言葉」を論理の展開を示すために使います。これがきちんと使われていないと、論理の方向性がわからなくなるので、非常に重要です。
つなぎ言葉の主要な2つの働きは、
- 前後の文をつなぐこと
- 書いている人が、これからどういう意見を述べるつもりなのかを示すこと
です。
例えば、howeverであれば前述の否定、in contrastであれば対比などです。
日本語だと、つなぎ言葉（接続詞）が多くなると読みづらくなってしまうため、なるべく省いたほうがいいとされることもあります。省いても文脈で意味がわかるだろう、と言うのが主な理由のようです。
しかし、英文ビジネス文書では、つなぎ言葉は必ず必要です。
英文ビジネス文書は、誰が読んでも一義的な解釈になるように書かなければなりません。
様々なバックグラウンドを持つ人が読むことが想定されるため、文脈から、自分が思うように相手も解釈できるだろうと推定するのは危険です。
英文ビジネス文書の論理的構成
盛り込むべき情報は何かを考える
英文ビジネス文書を書く最初のステップは、盛り込むべき情報は何かを考えることです。
自分の伝えたいメッセージを明確にし、その根拠は何かを具体的に書くための情報です。
代理店契約の締結に関する社内文書を例に考えると、
- 代理店契約を締結する理由
- なぜ提案の代理店がいいのか
- 自分の判断と判断基準
- 読み手が結論を出せる情報
などです。
これらの情報を、論旨が一貫するようにつなぎ言葉でつなげながら、書きます。
論理的文章の具体的な構成
盛り込むべき情報は何かが決まったら、次は文章の構成です。
前述の通り、英語でビジネス文書を書く時には、どんな時でも必ず結論（言いたいこと）を先に述べ、次に説明（理由）を述べるようにします。
特に書き出しは必要ありません。
文章が複数のパラグラフになる場合は、論点をはっきりさせるために、1つのパラグラフで言いたいことは１つにします。
一行でパラグラフのまとめができるようにし、そのまとめをパラグラフの初めに書きます。そして、それだけ読めば、パラグラフ全体の趣旨がわかるようにします。
重要な論点から先に述べ、論点は多くても3つほどに留めます。それ以上になると、読み手が覚えていられなくなります。
そして、同じことを繰り返すことになるため、最後にもう一度結論を書いたり、まとめをする必要はありません。

上記の構成にならった英文ビジネス文書の具体例は、以下になります。
具体例１：新しい代理店契約を結びたい

つなぎ言葉の一覧
英文ビジネス文書でよく使われるつなぎ言葉は、以下になります。並び順は、順不同です。
同じような意味合いでも使い方が違う場合があるので（例えば「despite」と「in spite of」など）、使い方に不安がある場合は、辞書などでご確認ください。
私もしていたのですが、人が書いた文章を見て、こんな使い方ができるんだと思った言い回しは、コピペしてひとまとめにしておくと便利です。数がたまってくると、書き方に詰まった時にそれを見れば、こう書けばいいんだと言うひらめきが得られます。
